Movie History Behind the Coffee Mug
At I Crave Cars, we love the history behind our collections almost as much as we love the design. This is the story of how Bullitt went from novel to major motion picture.
Steve McQueen proved that it doesn't take pages of dialog to make an Academy Award winning film when he stared in Bullitt. All it takes is a 1968 Mustang and a Dodge Charger chasing each other through the hilly San Francisco streets.
Bullitt was based on the 1963 novel Mute Witness, by Robert L. Fish. In 1968 Steve McQueen's production company, Solar Productions, turned it into a feature length film. This film is noteworthy mostly for it's use filming on location vs actual interior studio sets. This allowed for a realism that was hardly ever seen in movies of the time. This on location style of filming now acts as a snapshot as to the way that San Francisco looked and felt in the late 1960s. This is most apparent as the main character's cars race from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf to Guadalupe Canyon Parkway.
